PAUD DAY 1: A WARM INTRODUCTION

March 25th 2015

The future of Indonesia depends on them, and they deserve a future that is as bright as their smiles.

"Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini (PAUD) or early childhood education is the level of education before primary education which is a development effort aimed at children from birth to the age of six, which is done through the provision of educational stimulus to help the growth and development of children physically and mentally in order to have the readiness to enter further education."

This was our first day to teach children in PAUD An-Nur, Cilenggang, BSD. Our group consists of 7 persons: Jovita, Dejan, Milka, Priska, Mitha, Eunike and me. But unfortunately, because of some reasons Eunike couldn’t join us at that day. At around eight in the morning, we arrived there. There was nothing special about the place; it was a simple building which was built independently by the community- there were no enormous classrooms with air conditioner and sophisticated playgrounds, but still, the atmosphere in there was very lively and warm. The teachers were very friendly and the children were very playful, there were a lot of happy faces in that morning. I think that's the most important thing.

We made a quick introduction before we start the lesson.

“Ayo anak-anak, sudah kenal belum dengan kakaknya? Kenalan dulu yuk,” said the teacher.
“Halo kakak, namanya siapa?” the children shouted simultaneously.
“Nama saya Kak Windy.”
“Halo kak Windy!” they shouted cheerfully.

And after a few minutes later,

“Hayo, tadi siapa nama kakaknya?” the teacher jokingly asked.
“Aduh nama kakaknya susah, Bu Guru!” said one of the children with a confused expression.
And then we all laughed.
It was very pleasant to meet them.

There are three classes in PAUD An-Nur: Class A, Class B, and the play group. And after we prayed together and separated into two small groups: (Windy, Jovita, Dejan in Class A and Milka, Priska, Miitha in Class B), we finally started the lesson.

In Class A the children were categorized by the age around 4-5 years. We taught them about the variations of communication media such as radio, telephone, television, laptop, and satellites. We draw the shape of each device, told them to identify each part of the devices, and taught them the word in English. The kids were very curious and impassioned, which made us even more motivated to teach them. We rewarded them with candies and jellies every time they answered our questions correctly. Some of them were eager to answer the questions, either just to get the candy or actually knew the answers. And before the class ended, the kids had a break time and ate their breakfast.

breakfast time!

I was very nervous yet so excited, because this was my first experience to teach children in PAUD. Thanks to Bina Nusantara University to make that happen, because if we weren't required for teaching-in order to get a Community Service point, we would never have a valuable experience like this.
